New IMAX® Film at Fernbank Museum Explores Iconic Animals of the Ice Age

Titans of the Ice Age, one of the most highly anticipated giant screen releases this year, will bring prehistoric icons, including the wooly mammoth and saber-tooth cats, to life on Fernbank’s IMAX® screen. Presented in conjunction with the special exhibition Extreme Mammals, this action-packed film provides an immersive portal to the great Pleistocene ice age, 20,000 years back in time, showing daily on Fernbank’s five story IMAX® screen from March 29-August 15, 2013.

Narrated by Academy Award® winning actor Christopher Plummer (The Sound of Music, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Titans of the Ice Age  transports viewers to the otherworldly frozen landscapes of the northern hemisphere 10,000 years before modern civilization.

Titans of the Ice Age brings this harsh and beautiful era to life – a world buried in our ancestral memory, populated by saber-tooth cats, giant sloths, dire wolves and the iconic woolly mammoths.  Travel across monumental glaciers and sweeping grasslands, rich in life.  Roam the mammoth steppe with baby Lyuba, a female Woolly Mammoth calf recently exposed by the melting Siberian permafrost, now one of the best preserved mammoth mummies in the world.  Discover the story of Zed, one of the most complete Colombian Mammoth skeletons ever uncovered, extracted in 2008 from the famous La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles. Witness a time when titans ruled untamed continents and humans walked with giants.

“Titans of the Ice Age is a great pairing with our Extreme Mammals exhibition. Visitors can learn about these prehistoric animals as they encounter authentic fossils and incredible displays in the exhibition, and then see these creatures come to life on the IMAX® screen,” said Lynn Anders, a biologist at Fernbank Museum. “The film portrays very realistic footage of life on Earth during the last Ice Age, and does a great job of showcasing how scientists study fossil sites, like the incredible La Brea Tar Pits, to learn more about the life and death of these incredible creatures.”

“Audiences will experience the world of these prehistoric animals with a realism that only this canvas can provide,” said Andy Wood, the film’s Producer.  “We are really proud to have worked with a distinguished team of scientists and partners to tell this story.  The end result is a film that is both highly entertaining and revealing.”

As one of the first films shot using ultra high definition digital cameras, Titans of the Ice Age is a visual experience new to the giant screen medium.  Stunning backdrops shot on location at Yellowstone National Park, the Northern Great Plains, the Rocky Mountains and Alaska provide the scenery on which the drama of the Pleistocene unfolds.  State-of-the-art, ultra-HD CGI (computer generated imagery) allows long extinct Ice Age mammals to populate this world in photorealistic detail alongside Paleolithic humans, played by native Iñupiat and Yup’ik Alaskans.

Titans of the Ice Age is a production of Giant Screen Films and D3D Cinema, in association with The Field Museum, Chicago.

Titans of the Ice Age shows at Fernbank Museum’s IMAX® Theatre daily from March 29-August 15, 2013. IMAX tickets are $13 for adults, $12 for students/seniors, $11 for children ages 12 and younger, and $8 for Museum Members.  Value Pass tickets offer admission to both the museum and an IMAX® ticket at the best value of $23 for adults, $21 for students/seniors, $19 for children, and $8 for Museum Members.

Fernbank Museum of Natural History is located at 767 Clifton Road NE in Atlanta. For tickets and visitor information, visit www.fernbankmuseum.org or call 404.929.6300.

More than the greatest story ever told, it's the greatest adventure.  THE BIBLE, an epic 10-hour / five-part docudrama will premiere Sunday, March 3 on HISTORY.

Created and executive produced by renowned producer Mark Burnett (The Voice, Survivor, The Apprentice, Shark Tank) and Roma Downey (Touched by an Angel), the series promises to be a landmark television event, combining one of the greatest collections of stories ever assembled with live action and state-of-the-art CGI. The series will be narrated by Emmy award-winning actor/vocalist Keith David (Mr & Mrs Smith; Platoon; Crash) and will feature a musical score by the world renowned Grammy and Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer.

Leading the outstanding international cast is Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated actress and series’ co-executive producer Roma Downey, who plays Mother Mary. The series will feature some of the most famous stories ever written from Noah’s Ark and the Exodus to Daniel in the Lion’s Den to the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus.

“The Bible is a sacred text that continues to challenge and inspire,” said Mark Burnett.  “We’ve been working on this project for the past two years and are deeply humbled to be given this once in a generation opportunity to breathe new visual life into the Bible’s profound stories.  The Bible gives meaning and purpose to billions of people around the world, and sparks the curiosity of millions more.”

“HISTORY has a legacy of delving into important subjects to which all people are connected,” said Nancy Dubuc, President, Entertainment and Media for A+E Networks.  “There’s no question the Bible is one of the world’s most significant and most popular books, which holds within it the incredible and powerful stories that truly changed the course of history and religion the world about.  We are thrilled to work with Mark and Roma, who have vividly brought the Bible to life for a new generation, and we hope the series will resonate for generations to come.”

Artwork at Fernbank Puts Nature On Display

The contemporary wildlife art of Pen Brady will be on display at Fernbank Museum of Natural History in the special exhibition Form Revisited from March 2-August 18, 2013. This collection of 25 original acrylic and India ink paintings reveals eye-catching portrayals of birds, insects, fish, mammals and flowers.
Both intricate and fluid, her work offers movement to the subjects of her designs. Brady’s extremely fine lines and ability to master solid colors with no signs of brush strokes often mislead viewers into thinking her work is of a digital or serigraphic process. It is, however, completely done with brush and technical pens. This sharp detail is signature element to her work and offers a sense of harmony in nature.

“The use of line and solid shapes reveals aboriginal art roots that helped develop my technique,” Brady said. “Within each painting, I try to capture the grace and beauty inherent in all living creatures and offer that to the observer for a visual experience and a celebration of life.”

Inspired by the native art of the Pacific Northwest, which is more commonly known for carved works such as the totem pole, Brady translates her experiences with nature into paintings. She uses traditional colors like black, white, and yellow, while pulling in other shades from the natural world, including sky blues and earthy greens.

As her style developed in the mid-1990s, Brady experimented with the structure and imagery of Native American art. Within a few years, her acrylic and ink paintings had transformed from the traditional iconic style into her own, personal perspective of the natural world.

After studying art at Missouri Western State University in Saint Joseph, Missouri, Brady worked as an artist, graphic designer, and a botanical and zoological model builder for major museums and science centers throughout the world. She now devotes her time entirely to her painting.

Form Revisited is on view from March 2 through August 18, 2013 at Fernbank Museum of Natural History. The exhibition is included with museum admission, which is $17.50 for adults, $16.50 for students/seniors, $15.50 for children ages 3 to 12, and free for members and children ages 2 and younger.

Fernbank Museum is located at 767 Clifton Road NE in Atlanta. Tickets and visitor information are available at 404.929.6300 or www.fernbankmuseum.org.
